The nail industry is changing.
Ingredient lists are receiving more attention, regulations are evolving, and terms such as TPO-free and HEMA-free are now everywhere — on bottles, websites, social media and product packaging.
For nail professionals, this can quickly become confusing.
Is TPO banned? Is HEMA dangerous? Is Di-HEMA the same thing as HEMA? Does HEMA-free mean safer? And if a product isn't HEMA-free, does that automatically make it a bad choice?
The short answer is: it's much more nuanced than that.
Understanding what these ingredients are — and what the terminology actually means — allows nail technicians to make informed decisions rather than relying on marketing claims or information circulating on social media.
Let's break it down.

What Is TPO?
TPO stands for Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide.
It is a photoinitiator, an ingredient previously used in some UV/LED-curable nail products. Photoinitiators play an essential role in the curing process: when exposed to the appropriate light, they initiate the chemical reaction that allows the product to polymerise and harden.
TPO was previously permitted in professional artificial nail systems in the European Union under specific conditions.
That has now changed.
Is TPO Banned in the EU?
Yes.
From 1 September 2025, TPO is prohibited in cosmetic products in the European Union following its classification as a CMR substance and the application of Commission Regulation (EU) 2025/877.
The European Commission has also clarified that from this date, products containing TPO cannot be supplied or used professionally on clients as part of a commercial service in the EU — even if that particular product was purchased before the prohibition came into effect.
This distinction is important.
In the EU today, TPO-free isn't simply a new trend, premium feature or optional formulation choice. It is a regulatory requirement for cosmetic products placed and made available on the market.

What Is HEMA?
HEMA stands for 2-Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate.
It is a methacrylate monomer that has been widely used in professional nail systems.
HEMA can contribute useful properties to a formulation, but it is also a known skin sensitiser. The primary concern is exposure to uncured product, particularly repeated contact with the skin surrounding the nail.
This is why application technique matters so much.
HEMA itself should not simply be translated as:
HEMA = bad product.
The reality is considerably more complicated.

Is HEMA Banned in the EU?
No.
This is probably one of the most important misconceptions to clear up.
HEMA is not banned in professional nail products in the European Union.
Under EU cosmetics legislation, nail products containing HEMA are restricted to professional use only and must carry the appropriate warnings:
“For professional use only.”
and
“Can cause an allergic reaction.”
These restrictions have applied since 2021.
So there is an important regulatory difference between TPO and HEMA:
TPO is prohibited. HEMA is restricted.
They should not be discussed as though they have the same legal status.

And What About Di-HEMA?
This is where the subject becomes particularly interesting.
Another ingredient nail technicians may encounter is Di-HEMA Trimethylhexyl Dicarbamate, often shortened to Di-HEMA TMHDC.
Despite the similar name, HEMA and Di-HEMA TMHDC are not the same ingredient.
However, both are specifically addressed by current EU cosmetics legislation for nail products. Products containing Di-HEMA TMHDC, like those containing HEMA, are restricted to professional use and require the appropriate warnings.
And this leads to an important point about product labels.
HEMA-Free Does Not Necessarily Mean Di-HEMA-Free
If a manufacturer describes a product as HEMA-free, that statement should be interpreted literally:
the formulation does not contain HEMA.
It doesn't automatically tell you whether the product contains Di-HEMA TMHDC.
Nor does it tell you that the product contains no other acrylates or methacrylates.
If this distinction matters to you, always check the complete ingredient list rather than relying solely on a claim printed prominently on the front of the bottle.

Why Has HEMA-Free Become So Popular?
Awareness of acrylate allergies has increased significantly within the nail industry.
Technicians are talking about allergies more openly, clients are asking more questions about products, and manufacturers have responded by developing a much wider range of HEMA-free formulations.
Having more choice is a positive development.
However, HEMA-free has also become a powerful marketing term, and that's where we need to be careful.
A product shouldn't automatically be considered superior simply because the words HEMA FREE appear on its packaging.
Likewise, the presence of HEMA in a professional-use product that complies with applicable regulations does not, by itself, tell you whether that product is good or bad.
A formulation needs to be considered as a whole.

HEMA-Free Does Not Mean Allergy-Free
This deserves its own section because it's perhaps the biggest misunderstanding surrounding HEMA-free products.
HEMA-free does not mean allergy-free.
Removing one particular methacrylate from a formulation does not remove every substance capable of causing sensitisation.
A HEMA-free professional nail product may still contain other acrylates or methacrylates.
Therefore:
HEMA-free ≠ methacrylate-free ≠ allergy-free.
This doesn't make the HEMA-free label meaningless. It provides useful information about the formulation and may be important when choosing products.
It simply shouldn't be interpreted as a guarantee that an allergic reaction cannot occur.

TPO-Free and HEMA-Free Mean Two Completely Different Things
Because the two claims often appear together on modern nail products, it's easy to assume they describe the same type of issue.
They don't.
TPO-free means that the product does not contain Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide.
HEMA-free means that the product does not contain 2-Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate.
And a HEMA-free product may still contain Di-HEMA TMHDC or other methacrylates, depending on its formulation.
That's why a simple statement such as:
“TPO & HEMA FREE”
doesn't describe the entire chemistry or sensitisation potential of a product.
It tells you two specific things about two specific ingredients.
Nothing more.

Why Skin Contact Matters So Much
Whatever system you're using, one principle remains fundamental:
Uncured nail product should not repeatedly come into contact with the skin.
The EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety specifically identified inappropriate application and contamination of the skin surrounding the nail as relevant to the sensitisation risk associated with HEMA and Di-HEMA TMHDC.
This means good technique isn't only about creating a beautiful manicure.
Avoiding flooded cuticles and sidewalls, controlling your product and preventing unnecessary skin exposure are also part of responsible professional practice.
If uncured product accidentally touches the skin, it should be removed carefully before curing.
And changing to a HEMA-free system does not make careless application acceptable.

Correct Curing Is Just as Important
A product looking or feeling hard does not necessarily tell you everything about how effectively it has polymerised.
Professional UV/LED nail systems are formulated around particular photoinitiators and curing conditions.
This is why manufacturers provide curing instructions and, in many cases, recommendations regarding compatible lamps.
Using an unsuitable lamp, shortening curing times or assuming that every UV/LED lamp will cure every product identically isn't good professional practice.
Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the system you're using.
The lamp and the product should be treated as part of the same curing process.

What About Mixing Different Brands?
This is another area where professional judgement matters.
A base from one manufacturer, builder gel from another and top coat from a third may appear to work perfectly together.
But nail systems are formulated and tested according to manufacturers' specifications.
When products from different systems are combined, you cannot automatically assume that the resulting combination has been tested by either manufacturer for compatibility or curing performance.
This doesn't mean that different brands can never be used within one service.
It means professionals should understand that visible compatibility isn't the same thing as manufacturer-validated compatibility.
Always check the manufacturer's recommendations when in doubt.

Nail Technicians Have Different Exposure Than Clients
There's another reason this subject matters particularly to professionals.
A client may have their nails done every few weeks.
A nail technician may handle uncured nail products multiple times every day.
That difference in occupational exposure matters.

Professional working practices should therefore protect the technician as well as the client.

Should Nail Technicians Choose HEMA-Free Products?
There is no universal answer.
HEMA-free formulations provide professionals with more choice, and for some technicians they may form an important part of their product selection.
But HEMA-free shouldn't become shorthand for “good”, while HEMA-containing automatically becomes “bad”.
That's an oversimplification of cosmetic chemistry.
Instead, consider:
  • the complete formulation,
  • whether the product complies with applicable regulations,
  • who manufactured it,
  • whether clear ingredient and usage information is available,
  • how it should be cured,
  • what system it is designed to work with,
  • and whether you're using it according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Professional product selection should be based on information, not fear.

Learn to Look Beyond the Front Label
You don't need a chemistry degree to be a knowledgeable nail technician.
But learning to look beyond marketing claims is becoming increasingly important.
If a bottle says HEMA-free, find out what that actually means.
If something is described as TPO-free, understand why.
Read ingredient lists.
Follow manufacturers' instructions.
Know which regulations apply to the products you're using.
And be careful with absolute claims such as “safe”, “non-allergenic” or “allergy-free.”
Cosmetic chemistry rarely fits into such simple categories.

And you shouldn't assume a product is automatically safer because one familiar ingredient is missing.
